11/28/08 03:39 AM Update Humpday - Sept 26, 2008 by Gizmo

Ment to post this out last night; but I'll do a quick posting while waiting on the ham to complete...

I finished our rollout of the new link tracker; took forever going through all of the old scripts and getting everything in place...

I've been giving thought as to what I want to focus on next... Weather I want to work on getting the code repository drawup started or get the links script rolled up, cleaned out, and added to the admin center for easier maintenance (as it really does need worked on and fits with the link tracker)...

The Required Reading / Book Sugguestion tool is about done with the basic release so it's in the wild now; it'll need to be worked on and have data populated before I can add the finishing touches; but that's another note for another season :P...

Once I get the current tools that I have logged to work on done, we'll turn focus to data population... Right now I'm generating the tools and their google rss feeds so content will get added to google as it's added to the scripts. So data population is a job for a cold lonely winters night with lots of Gin...

11/24/08 01:30 PM New Mailing by Gizmo

I sent out a mailing just now to all users who've opted to accept admin emails; this mailing was as follows:

Quote:
We've been busy this late Summer/Fall working on new portions of the site (and upgrades to old!) and I just wanted to take the time to send you all a quick update.

I've taken and built out a few new scripts to replace "stand alone" pages that we've had for years (and manually updated); this means that users can actually provide content without having to be staff!

And best of all, all of the new sections can be added to...

Now the fun part, we've added:
Articles - You can now submit articles without having to register to "yet another" script; simply enter your data and submit...

Archive - Just like the Articles Script, you can link to various programs and scripts (or articles with various content) and even request your files to be mirrored.

Recommended Reading - Our long standing pages of "what books are the best" will be added here; it'll allow us to keep everything in a structured environment and make it easier to find everything without having to troll through various threads on the forums.

Reviews - Yeh, I finally made good on my promise to organize things into something more manageable.

Video Syndication - You can now post your favorite videos from Google, Yahoo, MySpace, and YouTube!

You'll find that a lot of the areas are bare, since most of our staff have moved onto other projects, it's just a few of us to keep house. After some dev time on other sections that we're working on, we'll gear towards populating the databases.

I'm hoping some of you may have some recommendations for the new scripts that you would want added; if you don't want to have to add them yourselves, simply send me an email (gizmo[at]undergroundnews[dot]com) or PM me on the forums (likely best) and I'll get to work wink.

We've made a lot of other changes to the site, but most of them the casual observer won't notice unless they pay close attention :P...

I would like to thank you all for your time, and would like to wish you all Happy Holidays.

PS, if you're one of those waiting for word on DotSlashHack, we've had some setbacks (dataloss) but we're still moving forward (albeit slowly) and will gear towards dedicated updates on it once our development cycle on UGN has completed for this season.

11/24/08 01:10 PM A special update... by Gizmo

Well, I generally try to wait until Wednesday to roll out updates, but this one deserved some merit ahead of time as it effects all outward links on the main site...

I've been trying for some time to make it so we can track all outward links while linking to sites (for link performance tracking); well, after much trial and error I decided to just list the links directly to the tracker, which effected link referrals to clients and affiliates.

Well, after reading up a bit more and touching base on the issues I had before, I've successfully come up with a solution which will allow us to link directly to sites using the href attribute (standard links) and use javascript to provide the link tracking...

What does this mean to the average user? Nothing at all, unless we link to your site somewhere on the site (other than the forums).

What does this mean to our advertisers and affiliates? Well, our page ranking will actually affect your links now since we're directly referring you vs linking through a script to your site...

Granted it'll take some time for everything to be updated and trolled again by SE's, but everything is in place now as planned.

And for those code geeks, just go look at the source on the links page, you'll see how simple of a solution I ended up with (and Syntax will of coarse notice that I made yet another friggen php function).

11/07/08 11:36 AM Required Reading Update... by Gizmo

In the coming weeks I'm planning to compile a Required Reading/Book Reviews sector of UGN Security; I'm giving thoughts to how I want it to be rolled out, so if you have some suggestions please let me know...

I'm planning for it to be separate from the other sections of the site (as in not in the reviews section). It'll have links to both Amazon and Barnes and Noble; if you have any others you'd like included, please let me know (please note that linking to local libraries will not be possible due to each being a separate entity; and linking to torrent sites will not be done for legal reasons).
