Looks like our Norton Re-Evaluation has come through, and we've even gotten their certification for ecommerce for the store in there :P.

I am currently laying the groundwork for a "Reports" hub; if you've seen any of our sister sites (such as
The GoNix Initiative you've seen that you can report any "issues" with just about anything (articles, files, links, etc); well, UGN Security will have the same thing soon!
What does this mean for you? Well, if you find say a file which is corrupt, or an article that is incomplete, you can let us know just by clicking the "report" icon next to its title.
We're also giving thought to adding a comments section to each item as well (which will ultimately work just how the reports system works) but that'll be something to touch base on at a later date.

Some time ago a project arose, it was Required Reading for Newbies; one of many projects that begun here at UGN Security over the years.
The goal of this project was to provide users with articles which would be beneficial to furthering their knowledge in many areas (computing, telecommunications, electronics, etc).
It's been some time since that project has existed, but we still respect all of the hard work of that project, and today we bring that one step further.
I'm happy to announce that the
Recommended Reading section of the main page that was thrown into existence earlier in the year is getting some much needed love. I've been working hard and long to finish up the system and start populating new content to it.
At the time being you can just see a simple description and link to amazon; but in the future you'll be able to locate the book(s) on numerous online retailers via its ISBN tag.
We're also planning to have an image of the book(s) beside their listing as well as some other little additions (stay tuned for our Summer Code announcements coming in a few weeks).
For the time being, if you have a couple of books you'd like to recommend, just let us know! You can always
Submit a Book (since the site is built around YOU, you can always help by submitting content!).

I am in the process of doing some spring cleaning currently as some issues have arose...
On some pages when submitting an invalid captcha response you'll be presented with a blank page versus a proper error message; I'm not entirely sure what's causing said behavior, but I anticipate a fix shortly.
I'll be going through the error logs and checking various settings to see if there are any other cleanup tasks to be had.
I'm also planning to preform several service upgrades as well, but these shouldn't effect performance much (if at all).

I neglected to mention; the Freenode SSL ports (on supported servers) are 7000 and 7070.

UGN Security would like to take the time to wish you all a Safe and Happy Holiday Season! (And Merry Christmas to you who think I'm saying "Happy Holidays" to not say Christmas).
Be safe, don't drink and drive, tell those you love that you love them...

Hey guys, I had hoped to have more of the data population done on the new Archive and Knowledgebase systems but unfortunately some medical issues came up and I'm not really able to work on them for the time being.
On Friday October 23rd I went in for surgery on a tumerous growth and am unable to walk for several weeks; now normally I'd have the perfect opportunity to work on things under these conditions, however the pain medications make it difficult to format the data and troubleshoot any potential issues that can come out which would result in having to do some slight recoding.
So, for the time being, since I'm the only one working on the data population and coding, I'll need to place those projects on the back burner until I'm no longer on pain medication and the medical issues have lightened up.
I'm expecting this to only take a couple of weeks, so it shouldn't be too large of a dent in the grand scheme of things. I'll take the downtime to submit all sitemaps to Google Webmaster Tools to ensure their cache of all data is up to date.

It's been a while since I finalized version 1 of our new articles system this summer. I'm glad to say that I've begun populating the systems (finally) with the old data, so we should be having everything in a much easier to access and easier to read area soon.
Since I am doing this all solo it'll take a while to get all of the old stuff in, but if you've got some new stuff you'd like to see added, feel free to submit it! Each new system has a "submit content" page built right into it, so anyone can add their stuff (though only an admin can approve it).
It's my hope that I'll have all of this done by mid-October as a large portion of our Autumn update; I'm planning to work on the Archive as well, but that'll wait until after I've finished with the Knowledge Base (Articles).
If you have any ideas for improvement in the systems, feel free to let me know!

Well, we've just been alotted a new set of IP Addresses for the server that we pushed through this AM (having only 2 hours sleep!).
I had a small problem which caused a 2 hour downtime due to a 4 minute edit lol; it's up and running now though.
Our old subnet was: 38.99.95
Our new subnet is: 68.68.100
The technical details of the problem where that I did not go in and check the interfaces manually; i trusted Webmin had updated them for me in the config options in the control panel...
Lesson: always double check, otherwise you get to learn how to use a virtual console and alternative text editors just trying to get things back up and running, and it'll take you 3 hours lol...
But all is changed, all is fixed, all is fine!

I've gone ahead and upgraded the Gallery script we've been using here; some user accounts have been having issues logging in (mine in particular) so if you have any problems, please either Email me or PT me on the forums and I'll try to fix it ;).

I've spent some time today touching base with how the review system outputs data, specifically with different types of reviews and their relation to what displays genaricly.
I've added some subsets to the code that will differenciate on different sections on weather you're looking at a video review, or software...
Basically, you won't see a price of $0 on a video review, or a delivery method, as these are for product reviews. Instead, you'll just see what pertains to the section you're in (director instead of producer, etc).
I've also made it so the "body" of the review shows under the ad, it should help with visual real estate and give you more room to more easily view the review. The other sections of the review will continue to be to the right of the page advertisement.

We've updated our archive of the K-1ine zine to include all of the new issues (the latest we had was #45 whereas they where up to 51).
Additionally, we've added both Phrack and K-1ine to the new archive system and will be updating any site links to reflect this change.
We still have a couple of things to move from the old archive before we purge it from the server, at this point I think we'll just lock the old archive to force users to use the new one as it's more secure and fits into the site design...

We've also uninstalled all instances of WordPress due to security concerns.
